    KNOXVILLE — In a strategic alliance initiated in January 2021, the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) and the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, established themselves as principal partners in the creation of the Tennessee RiverLine – North America's next great regional trail system, spanning 1.2 million acres of interconnected river experiences – as an initiative of UT Extension. TVA has renewed its commitment, solidifying its dedication to the Tennessee RiverLine's transformative vision.

  • Gasoline Prices Rise During Week

    TENNESSEE — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 6.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.06/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 22.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 8.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 1.3 cents in the last week and stands at $4.02 per gallon.

  • Congressman Kustoff Secures $15 Million for Two Area Highways

    WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman David Kustoff (R-TN) secured $5,000,000 for the Tennessee Department of Transportation to add more lanes to Highway 641 from Howard Road, in Henry County, to the Kentucky state line. Specifically, it will widen US-641 to four-lanes from Paris, Tennessee into Kentucky.

    HENRY (March 10) — A Paris man was arrested on arson charges after two boats were set ablaze in the Henry area Sunday evening.

  • Just Say No to Vouchers

    Tuesday, March 12

    $144 Million, that’s how much money could/will leave Tennessee public schools and flow into the pockets of private (for-profit) schools within the first year of the school voucher program, the money will “follow the student.” According to Governor Bill Lee’s proposal, the state will pay up to $7,000 annually per student that has the means and desire to attend a private school instead of the public school in their area.

  • West Carroll Board of Education Approves Metal Detector, Vehicles

    ATWOOD (March 7) — New vans, a pickup truck, a metal detector to screen incoming visitors or students, and a new storage building were all approved for purchase during the March 7 meeting of the Board of Education of the West Carroll Special School District.

  • West Carroll School Launches Phone App, Upgraded Website

    ATWOOD (March 7) — West Carroll Special School District launched a new phone app and upgraded its website to better serve the stakeholder of the school system. Michelle Robinson, who headed the project, displayed the newly available phone app, that will provide a central point of communications for teachers, students and parents. Robinson said the app and upgraded website will consolidate communications for the school system.

  • Sidewalk Replacement Begins in Downtown McKenzie

    McKENZIE (March 11) — The much-anticipated sidewalk development in downtown McKenzie began on Monday as construction crews begin to tear out sidewalks and replace them with sidewalks that meet American with Disabilities Act.

    CARROLL COUNTY (March 11) — Super Tuesday has come and gone and the results are in for the Presidential Preference Primary of the 2024 election cycle. Last week, 2,522 Carroll Countians turned out to cast their ballots for the presidential candidate of their choice.

    NASHVILLE — Today, the Tennessee Department of Education announced state school and district designations for the 2022-23 school year, including Reward schools, Exemplary districts, and In Need of Improvement districts.     HUNTINGDON (March 7) — The Governor’s school voucher bill is moving in both houses and has a high probability of passage, said State Representative Brock Martin (R-Huntingdon). Martin was speaking at the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce’s Legislative Forum on Friday at the Carroll County Civic Center.

  • Huntingdon Welcomes New Industry INTOCAST

    HUNTINGDON (March 5) — On Tuesday, the Town of Huntingdon in conjunction with Carroll County Chamber of Commerce along with other officials announced a new industry, INTOCAST AG, will locate its first U.S. operations in Tennessee.

  • Sluggish Offense Stops Greenfield Advance in Tourney

    MURFREESBORO (March 8) — After posting 55 points in the quarterfinals, Greenfield’s offense did not fare as well in the semifinals. The Lady Yellowjackets (23-11) drew a good Moore County (27-8) team in the second round. While neither team scored many points, Greenfield bowed out of the Division I Class 1A tournament losing 38-28.

    MURFREESBORO (March 6) — The Lady Yellowjackets of Greenfield (22-10) picked up a big win Thursday evening as they knocked the North Greene (26-10) Lady Huskies out of the TSSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament. Greenfield took an early lead in the opening minutes and never lost their momentum winning 55-49 in the quarterfinal round.

    MURFREESBORO (March 7) — In the fourth 2A game of the day, the Loretto Lady Mustangs (27-3) faced the Westview Lady Chargers (22-5). Loretto and Westview kept the game close with nine lead changes. At game’s end, Westview lost 54-49 to Loretto who came in runner-up in the championship game against Gibson County.

  • Fillies Knocked Out of Tourney by State Champs

    MURFREESBORO (March 7) — After five months of competitive basketball, the Huntingdon Fillies season came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA State Championship for Class 2A. The Huntingdon Fillies (23-5) played their hearts out losing 58-49 against a tough Gibson County Lady Pioneers (30-1) team.

    Over the weekend, Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro was the site of some amazing high school girls’ basketball action. Nine of the 32 teams competing for gold were from West Tennessee.

A question asked earlier in the week was why are you, the McKenzie Banner, covering other schools in the state basketball tournament? My natural knee-jerk response was because it’s a business decision, but as I’ve had time to marinate on the question, that’s not the whole truth.
