Ways to Support the Rebels, Attend the Game McKENZIE (November 27) — For the third consecutive year, the McKenzie High School Rebels football team is headed back to Chattanooga to the Division I Class 1A State Championship. This year, the team is defending their title against the South Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday, December 1, at 3 p.m. EST (2 p.m. CST) at Finley Stadium.

McKenzie, Huntingdon Advance in State Playoffs HERMITAGE (November 3) — After one round of action in the TSSAA State Football Playoffs, the herd has thinned from 32 to 16 teams.

McKenzie Rebels Advance to Second Round McKENZIE (November 3) — The McKenzie Rebels opened the first round of the TSSAA State Football Playoffs with a 31-14 win over the Cornersville Bulldogs. Despite the Bulldogs taking an early lead, the Rebels took the lead and held strong for the remainder of the game.

Mustangs Close Regular Season with Win

HUNTINGDON (October 27) — On Friday, the Huntingdon Mustangs welcomed Trenton Peabody to Paul Ward stadium for their final regular season match-up. Their 48-14 victory over the Golden Tide capped a nine-game winning streak and gave them a 9-1 regular season record. The Mustangs are a perfect 7-0 in Region 6-2A and claimed the region title for the 2023 season.

Huntingdon Mustangs Stifle Camden Lions, 61-13

CAMDEN (October 20) — On Friday night Huntingdon traveled to Camden for a region match-up against the Lions. With their decisive victory, the Mustangs clinched the number one spot in Region 6-2A for the 2023 season. Leading 48-0 at the half, Huntingdon easily outplayed Camden both offensively and defensively. Camden’s only points came in the second half against Huntingdon’s second team under a running clock. The win is the eighth straight for Huntingdon, now 6-0 in region play, with a season record of 8-1.

Huntingdon Mustangs Shut Out the Gibson County Pioneers HUNTINGDON (October 13) — Friday night, Huntingdon welcomed Gibson County to Paul Ward Stadium for a region matchup. The Mustangs dominated the Pioneers on both sides of the ball and led the game 30-0 by the end of the first half. They scored twice more in the second half under a running clock. McKENZIE (October 26) — On Thursday night, the McKenzie Rebels hosted the West Carroll War Eagles for the Region 6-1A championship. Coming into the game, both teams were 4-0 in the region. At night’s end, the Rebels took the win, 42-12.

TRENTON (October 14) — On Saturday, the City of Trenton honored longtime coach and city alderman, Frank Gibson. Pedestrian Park in downtown Trenton was The Frank Gibson Pedestrian Park. Gibson spearheaded the creation of Pedestrian Park, turning a vacant lot in the heart of the downtown area into what is now one of the most utilized and beautiful amenities the city has to offer.

McKENZIE (October 20) — The Rebels continued to roll Friday night as they hosted Freedom Preparatory Academy of Memphis taking their eighth win of the season. McKenzie won 38-8 improving to 8-1 on the regular season and 4-0 in Region 6-1A.

Wildcats Comeback in Second Half for Homecoming Win

McKENZIE (October 21) — It was a day of comebacks at Wildcat Stadium Saturday. Hundreds of alums came back for Homecoming and the Bethel football team rewarded them with a second half comeback of their own to beat Cumberland University 24-7.

Women’s Soccer Wins Fourth in a Row

McKENZIE (October 20) — The Bethel Lady Wildcats won for the fifth time in their last six outings with a 2-0 win over No. 24 Campbellsville Friday night in McKenzie. It was the fourth straight for the Cats who moved to 9-2 overall and 4-1 in the MSC. It was the eighth meeting between the two programs with the series now tied at 4-4.

McKENZIE — Bethel University has announced the schedule of events for its 2023 Homecoming Celebration, “Continue the Tradition,” held October 16-22.

McKENZIE (October 14) — For much of the first half, the No. 12 Bethel Wildcats struggled on offense against the visiting Lakers of Roosevelt University.

McKENZIE (October 6) — Belle O’Brien is the 2023 MHS Football Homecoming Queen. She was crowned during pre-game ceremonies at Rebel Stadium on October 6. The candidates all entered the stadium in a convertible driven by Steven Berryman.

Former MHS Football Royalty Members Presented at Homecoming Parade

Six past members of McKenzie High School football homecoming royalties from 1948-64 were presented during the 2023 MHS Homecoming parade. The ladies enjoyed a gathering prior to the parade hosted by the McKenzie High School Alumni Association (MHSAA) and McKenzie City Florist and More, which included refreshments and time for reminiscing about their days at McKenzie High.

Mustang Football Placed on Probation

HERMITAGE (October 2) — Following an investigation concerning an on-the-field altercation during the Huntingdon-Milan football on Friday, September 22, the TSSAA placed both teams on probation until the end of the 2024-2025 school year. The schools were fined $500 annually, amounting to $1,000 each over the two-year period. Though schools are on probation they are still allowed to participate in post-season play.

McKENZIE (October 6) — McKenzie moved to 7-1 on the regular season and 4-0 in Region 6-1A play after an impressive Homecoming win Friday night. The Rebels hammered the Houston County Fighting Irish 56-7.

Huntingdon Mustangs Continue Winning Streak with 41-6 Win Over JCM

JACKSON (October 6) — Friday night, Huntingdon traveled to Jackson Northside to battle Jackson Central-Merry (JCM) in a regional matchup. This was the first contest on the field between the two schools. The Mustangs dominated JCM with a final score of 41-6, the only Cougar points of the night coming after a fumble recovery late in the fourth quarter with a running clock. Each first-half possession for the Cougars resulted in a punt, turnover on downs, or fumble. The Mustangs took advantage of each opportunity and scored 34 unanswered points in the first half with five successful scoring drives.

Mistakes Hurt Cats in Home Loss to Georgetown

McKENZIE (October 7) — Two early mistakes by No. 6 Bethel would prove to be costly for the Wildcats as they fell behind 14-0 to No. 19 Georgetown Saturday afternoon and would eventually suffer their first loss of the season losing 52-24 before a stunned crowd at Wildcat Stadium.

McKENZIE — The new 33,710 square-foot facility, multi-purpose sports practice facility is nearing completion.

McKENZIE — McKenzie High School is celebrating Homecoming 2023 this week. Friday includes a parade, a community pep rally, introduction of the Homecoming Court and the coronation of the queen, plus the Homecoming game featuring the McKenzie Rebels and the Houston County Fighting Irish.

HUNTINGDON (September 28) — Huntingdon’s Middle School Mustangs welcomed Jackson Northeast at Paul Ward Stadium Thursday night for the their last season match-up. With a 22-8 victory over the Jaguars, Huntingdon finished their season undefeated at 7-0, with a total 232 points scored and only 26 allowed.

Cats Win Fourth in a Row with Win Over Thomas University

McKENZIE — The No. 6 Bethel Wildcats scored a season-low 48 points Saturday but still won comfortably beating visiting Thomas University 48-14. Bethel entered the game as the nation’s highest-scoring team in the nation at 63.0 points per outing.

BRUCETON (September 22) — The McKenzie Rebels made the 20-mile cross-county trek to Hollow Rock-Bruceton Central High School to pick up their fifth win of the season. The Rebels dominated the Tigers 63-0 in the Region 6-1A victory.

Emotions Run Strong as the Mustangs Dominate the Bulldogs

MILAN (September 22) — Friday night marked the return to region play for the Huntingdon Mustangs (3-1) as they traveled to Milan to face the undefeated Bulldogs (5-0). Prior to the match-up, the Bulldogs were ranked number 1 in the state for the Class 2-A poll. Throughout four quarters of play the Mustangs dominated both defensively and offensively to win the game 32-14. Although tension between the local rivals erupted into a scrappy melee three minutes into the second quarter, coaches and officials quickly restored order, and the game continued without further incident. The travel win gave Huntingdon a 4-1 record for the season, 2-0 for region play.

McKENZIE (September 19) — McKenzie Lady Rebels Soccer celebrated Senior Night and a 4-0 victory over South Fulton at the MHS soccer field on Tuesday, September 19.

REAGAN (September 15) — On Friday night, McKenzie High School Football Head Coach Wade Comer picked up his 200th win as a head coach. What is even more remarkable is that all the wins come from his tenure at McKenzie High School.

REAGAN (September 15) — The McKenzie Rebels improved their record Friday night to 4-1 with the non-region road win at Scotts Hill. McKenzie handled Scotts Hill with ease as they picked up the 43-13 victory.

Huntingdon Posts Win Over Crockett County

HUNTINGDON (September 15) — Friday night marked the first meeting between the Huntingdon Mustangs (Class 2-A) and the Crockett County Cavaliers (Class 4-A). The Cavaliers arrived at Paul Ward Stadium with an undefeated season record that quickly appeared in danger as the Mustangs took control defensively and limited Crockett County’s scoring efforts to only one touchdown for the night. Offensively, the Mustangs found the end zone five times and Greyson Anderson posted a perfect five for five on extra point attempts. The home field win against the non-region opponent gave Huntingdon a 3-1 record for the season.

GLEASON (September 15) — In-county sports rivals, but kindred spirits with small town values of love and concern came together to support one of Gleason’s citizens, Grady Stafford, who sustained a significant injury over the Labor Day weekend.

McEWEN (September 8) — On Friday night, the Rebels traveled to middle Tennessee picking up their third win of the session and Coach Wade Comer’s 199th career win. In a quick-moving game, McKenzie led McEwen from start to finish picking up the 23-0 win.

Huntingdon Defeats Columbia Academy

COLUMBIA (September 8) — On Friday, the Huntingdon Mustangs traveled to Columbia to take on the Columbia Academy Bulldogs in a non-region matchup. This was the first meeting between the two schools. Although both teams moved the ball well in the first quarter, turnovers and a lack of offensive yardage for the Bulldogs in the remaining three quarters proved problematic and led to a 48-14 Mustang victory. The road win gave Huntingdon a 2-1 record for the season.

West Carroll Pounds Perry County with 47-14

ATWOOD (September 8) — For West Carroll coach Clayton Morris, the difference came in a simple adjustment that had to be made on the offensive line based on how Perry County was lining up.

Gleason Loses to Union City 48-8

Eighth-ranked Union City checked all the right boxes Friday night with its 48-8 mercy-rule win over Gleason in the Region 7-1A opener for both teams.

The McKenzie Rotary Club Hosts Rebel Senior Football

McKENZIE (August 11) — Recently, the McKenzie Rotary Club hosted the senior football players from McKenzie High School. Coach Wade Comer spoke of the upcoming season and the challenges ahead. The senior members of the team introduced themselves and stated the positions they play on the team.

Gleason's Claudia Pineda Signs with Bethel Softball

McKENZIE — It did not take new softball Coach Katherine Hannagan long to add her first player to the Lady Wildcat program. Gleason’s Claudia Pineda signed with the Cats on Monday. Claudia is the daughter of Filadelfo and Johanna Pineda of Gleason and will major in Criminal Justice.

Dresden Overpowers McKenzie in Week Two Match-up

McKENZIE (August 25) — As they say, all good things must come to an end, and so it did for the McKenzie Rebels’ winning streak Friday night. After 16 consecutive wins and a state championship, the Rebels finally had to put one down in the loss column. The Dresden Lions handled McKenzie fairly easily in the week two matchup, coming away with the 42-14 victory.

Rebels Look Strong with Jamboree Win Against McCracken County

PARIS (August 11) — In the final pre-season matchup before the start of the regular 2023 season, McKenzie scored early and held on to defeat the 6A Mustangs of McCracken County, 20-14. In the three-preseason game, McKenzie has been able to hold McNairy County, Lexington and McCracken County to a combined 20 points. Offensively, the Rebels have totaled 64 points in the three scrimmages.

Tigers Lose Their Bite at Paul Ward Stadium

HUNTINGDON (August 11) — Friday night, the Huntingdon Mustangs welcomed the Lexington Tigers for the annual Quarterback Club Jamboree at Paul Ward Stadium. The preseason match-up showcased both junior varsity and varsity Mustangs with each team competing through two quarters of play. The spectators who took the opportunity to preview Huntingdon High School football were not disappointed as both Mustang squads dominated the visiting Tigers.

Carroll County Shows Promise in Middle School Scrimmage

McKENZIE (August 5) — On Saturday, football teams from sixteen different middle schools clashed at Randy Thomas Field for the annual McKenzie Jamboree. Three Carroll County teams competed, including McKenzie, Huntingdon, and West Carroll Middle Schools. Each team played two twenty-minute quarters on one half of the football field, allowing double match-ups to occur simultaneously.

McKenzie Smacks Lexington 23-6

Rainy conditions forced the pre-season scrimmage between McKenzie and Lexington to be moved to Bethel University. The two and half hour event proved many positives for the hometown Rebels. Stafford Roditis hit two field goals (35 and 36 yards) and Timmy Arline found the end zone from 14 and 6 yards out. Tate Surber passed to Stafford Roditis for a 29 yard score.

Middle School Football Jamboree is Saturday

McKENZIE — The 2023 middle school football season kicks off Saturday, August 5 with the McKenzie Middle School Football Jamboree at Randy Thomas Stadium. Beginning at 4 p.m., local middle school teams will compete using half of the football field, allowing for two games to play simultaneously. The games are broken into two 18-minute halves with hydration breaks.
