Dru Emerson is Named Coach of McKenzie Lady Rebels Basketball

McKenzie Lady Rebels Head Basketball Coach Dru Emerson is married to Jamie Emerson, and they have three children- Ava (15), Millie (12) and Grady (9).

McKENZIE (April 5) — McKenzie Special School District announced McKenzie High School has promoted Dru Emerson to head coach for the Lady Rebels Basketball team. Coach Emerson was the assistant coach this past season, and has extensive coaching experience prior to joining the Rebels’ staff. Emerson was head varsity boys coach at Carroll Academy from 2020-2023 and was a 2020 TSSAA A.F. Bridges Divisional Finalist.

McKENZIE (April 1) — The McKenzie Special School District announces McKenzie High School has hired Keith Hodge as head football coach. Hodge is the 2023 Dresden football coach that blemished the Rebels’ undefeated regular season. Both teams met in the semi-final with the Rebels advancing to the state championship game.

Rebels Find a Groove Against Adamsville

HUNTINGDON (March 27) — McKenzie played Adamsville in their first game of the Diamond Classic. The Rebels were down by one at the end of the first inning. McKenzie was still in the game and scored one run in the second inning followed by another run in the third.

MURFREESBORO (March 7) — After five months of competitive basketball, the Huntingdon Fillies season came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA State Championship for Class 2A. The Huntingdon Fillies (23-5) played their hearts out losing 58-49 against a tough Gibson County Lady Pioneers (30-1) team.

Over the weekend, Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro was the site of some amazing high school girls’ basketball action. Nine of the 32 teams competing for gold were from West Tennessee.

The Fillies are Headed to the ‘Boro

The Huntingdon Fillies punched their ticket to Murfreesboro to play in the State Tournament Class AA quarterfinals with two late-game victorious rallies. Wednesday night the Fillies defeated Cheatham County 67-60 for the Region 6-2AA title. After trailing the Lady Cubs for most of the game, Huntingdon pushed forward in the final minutes to win the region title.

Mustangs End Season With a Heart-breaker

CAMDEN (February 27) — On Tuesday, the Huntingdon Mustangs lost to East Hickman in the region semifinals after leading 57-54 with 11 seconds remaining in regulation time.

Fillies, Mustangs Advance to Regional Semifinals

Over the weekend both the Huntingdon Fillies and the Mustangs advanced in region play. Although familiar territory for the Fillies, the Mustangs moved forward for the first time in three years.

Bethel Shows Well in 5K

The Bethel Wildcats went to the Rhodes College Track and Field Invitational Friday in Memphis. This was day one of the contest, with most of the events unfolding on Saturday. Bethel competed against teams across all divisions such as Memphis University, Berry college, Arkansas State, Centre, Christian Brothers, Freed-Hardeman, Blue Mountain, etc.

McKENZIE — Leaving McKenzie with hopes of a national title became a reality for Bethel University over the weekend. Bethel University’s Action Team traveled to the CMP Talladega Marksmanship Park in Talladega, Alabama to compete in the 2024 SASP College Nationals.

MILAN, Tenn. (March 12) After going with younger guys in the last three coaching selections, Milan has decided to go with a veteran this time around for its new head football coach. The Milan administration named McKenzie’s Wade Comer as the new coach on Tuesday. “I am excited to announce Wade Comer as the new Milan High School head football coach,” Milan superintendent Jonathan Criswell said. “Coach Comer has the championship coaching experience we were looking for and a legacy of developing young men into great leaders. I’m excited for our team to begin the process with Coach Comer toward another fall of victorious Bulldog football.”

Sluggish Offense Stops Greenfield Advance in Tourney

MURFREESBORO (March 8) — After posting 55 points in the quarterfinals, Greenfield’s offense did not fare as well in the semifinals. The Lady Yellowjackets (23-11) drew a good Moore County (27-8) team in the second round. While neither team scored many points, Greenfield bowed out of the Division I Class 1A tournament losing 38-28.

Greenfield Lady Yellowjackets Advance to Semifinals in ‘Boro

MURFREESBORO (March 6) — The Lady Yellowjackets of Greenfield (22-10) picked up a big win Thursday evening as they knocked the North Greene (26-10) Lady Huskies out of the TSSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament. Greenfield took an early lead in the opening minutes and never lost their momentum winning 55-49 in the quarterfinal round.

The Westview Lady Chargers team faced a tough opponent in the Lady Mustangs of Loretto High School in the TSSAA state tournament.

MURFREESBORO (March 7) — In the fourth 2A game of the day, the Loretto Lady Mustangs (27-3) faced the Westview Lady Chargers (22-5). Loretto and Westview kept the game close with nine lead changes. At game’s end, Westview lost 54-49 to Loretto who came in runner-up in the championship game against Gibson County.

McKenzie Basketball Falls Short at Houston County

HOUSTON COUNTY (February 26, 27) — McKenzie basketball traveled to Houston County in the regional tournament last week looking to extend to their basketball season. The Lady Rebels faced off against the Wayne County Lady Wildcats while the Rebels battled the Frank Hughes Lions. Both McKenzie teams were unsuccessful in pulling off the wins as their season drew to a close.

McKENZIE — The Bethel softball program has a new look this season. The Lady Wildcats have a newly renovated locker room.

Bethel Men’s Indoor Track Season Ends

BROOKINGS, S.D. — The Bethel University Men's Track team ended one of the best indoor track performances in Bethel history. The Distance-Medley relay who won the Mid-South Conference Championship, ended up 22nd in the nation. All-American Joseph Skoog continued his historic run after finishing runner-up in the 3000m and then bouncing back in the 5000m to finish third. Skoog was coming off a Mid-South Conference Championship. The ceiling is high for Bethel's Track team as they now prepare to be ready for outdoor competition.

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The No. 6 seeded Bethel Wildcats fell to the No. 3 seeded Georgetown Tigers 80-70 Saturday night in the quarterfinals of the Mid-South Conference Men’s Basketball Tournament in Bowling Green. The Wildcats trailed by 16 at the half but battled back and gave the Tigers all they wanted and more in the second half.

The Milan Lions Club is hosting the annual ‘Sight Bowl’ this Friday night between the Bulldogs of MHS and the defending Class 1A state runners-up, the McKenzie Rebels. The scrimmage game is at Johnnie Hale Stadium, Milan at 5 p.m.

McKENZIE (February 24) — The Bethel Wildcats returned to action Saturday and continued their winning ways with a doubleheader sweep of visiting University of Michigan-Dearborn. The Cats won 16-3 and 7-1.

McKenzie (February 24) — The Rebels came out ready; they started the game with a 13-0 run. McKenzie was just as fierce on the defensive end, holding Collinwood to only four points in the first quarter. With a few big plays from Stafford Roditis and some threes from Hayden Garrett, the Rebels ended the first quarter up 24-4.

McKENZIE (February 23) — Perry County came out hot scoring the first five points of the quarter. McKenzie quickly retaliated with a basket from Madeline Gottshall and a three from Molly French.

McKENZIE (February 19) — Bethel University announces that two students and one faculty member will be representing the university in the upcoming National Collegiate Sales Competition (NCSSC) in Atlanta. The in-person championships are February 25-27, 2024, at the State Farm Arena, hosted by the Atlanta Hawks.

Gleason Seniors Honored on Last Regular Season Home Game

GLEASON (February 6) — Gleason Basketball Senior Night recognized nine outstanding seniors who have given their time and talents for the Bulldog program and who participated in their last regular season home basketball game at Gleason School. Each player was joined by their parents, family and special loved ones on the court. Seniors were presented with a commemorative plaque by their head coach and Gleason School.

McKENZIE (February 8) — Lady Rebels start the game off early with a 2-0 lead. Houston County matched the Lady Rebels’ intensity, going shot for shot as McKenzie ends up trailing 10-8 halfway through the first quarter. Lady Rebel Savannah Davis came alive with three three-pointers, starting the Lady Rebels’ 10-0 run, putting McKenzie up 18-10 at the end of the first quarter.

HUNTINGDON (January 30) — On Tuesday the McKenzie Lady Rebels and Rebels traveled to Huntingdon to take on the Fillies and Mustangs in a non-region matchup. The Lady Rebels extended their season record to 11-5 with a decisive 77-62 victory against the Fillies. The Rebels followed this victory with their own 73-64 win on the court over the Mustangs, bringing their season record to 12-6.

Huntingdon Takes Two Off Waverly

HUNTINGDON (February 2) — On Friday night, the Waverly Tigers and Lady Tigers traveled to Huntingdon for the second match-up between the two teams this week. Both Huntingdon teams emerged victorious. The Fillies increased their district record to 5-0, and 20-5 for the season while the boys posted a district record of 3-2, and 7-15 for the season.

Huntingdon Middle Wins Third Basketball State Championship

MURFRESSBORO (February 2) — Winning a state tournament is a rare feat and the Huntingdon Middle School Mustangs pulled off even a rarer feat Saturday on the campus of Middle Tennessee Christian School in Murfreesboro. The Mustangs defeated Decatur County 56 – 21 to earn a state title in back-to-back years, becoming the first sport in the history of Huntingdon Middle School to win two consecutive state championships.

Huntingdon Fillies Continue to Add Wins

During the week the Huntingdon Fillies advanced their district record to 3-0, 18-4 for the season overall, as they defeated both the Camden Lady Lions and the Dyersburg Lady Trojans. The 73-54 victory over the Class 3-AAA Lady Trojans was especially sweet after suffering a loss to Dyersburg earlier in the season. The Fillies followed this with a 58-24 win over Camden, a district 12-AA opponent. Conversely, the Mustangs ended the week 6-16 for the season, 1-2 in district play, with an 80-53 loss to Dyersburg, and an 81-67 loss to Camden.

NASHVILLE (January 12) — On Friday, the Tennessee Sports Wide Writers Association announced their selections for the All-State Football Teams of 2023. The list contains several players from around west Tennessee including McKenzie’s Colt Norden and Huntingdon’s Gray Eubanks. Both are juniors and are expected to have excellent 2024 seasons.

Lady Rebels Earn Overtime Win Over Henry County

McKENZIE (January 8) — After a tough loss to McEwen on Friday, January 5, the Lady Rebels found themselves battling a talented Henry County Lady Patriots team on Monday, January 8 at McKenzie. An overtime effort earned the Lady Rebels a 59-57 victory on the Lady Pats.

Huntingdon Fillies Dominate the Court

CAMDEN (January 12) — Friday evening the Huntingdon Mustangs and Fillies traveled to Camden for a district contest against the Lions. The Fillies extended their season record to 16-4 with their 63-25 win against the Lady Lions. In addition to dominating on the court, the Fillies were 11 of 13 from the free throw line in their decisive victory. The Mustangs dropped to 6-14 for the season with a narrow 67-64 loss to the Lions. With six district games remaining in the season, the Fillies are 2-0 within the district, and the Mustangs are 1-1.

Freed Takes Two from Bethel on the Hardwood

HENDERSON (January 13) — The Bethel Wildcats ran into a hot shooting Freed-Hardeman team Saturday in Henderson. The No 11 Lions shot 60 percent from the floor and knocked down 16 three-pointers enroute to a 100-54 win over the Wildcats.

Huntingdon Fillies Dominate the Court

HUNTINGDON (January 2, 5) — Tuesday evening the Huntingdon Mustangs and Fillies welcomed Martin-Westview for a non-district match-up. As defending state champions, the Lady Chargers arrived with a 12-1 record and led 35-27 at halftime. The Fillies battled back in the second half to win by four, 61-57. Leading scorer Lilly Kee surpassed 1,500 points in her high school career by posting 24 points, plus four blocked shots. Quinn Kelley followed by 12, Delaney Byars 10, Annabelle Singleton 8, Sara Beth Smith 4, and Josey Stokes 3. Ashlee Brent led the Lady Chargers with 14, while McCall Sims and Alexis Evans each posted 12.

Savannah Davis Sets New State 3-Point Record

McKENZIE (December 19) — Fans at the McKenzie-Milan prep basketball game on Tuesday, December 19 at the McKenzie High School Gymnasium, witnessed history when Savannah Davis, a McKenzie senior and Middle Tennessee State University signee, set a new state scoring record for the number of 3-point goals in a single game while she also matched the MHS high-scoring record for a single game.

McKENZIE (December 19) — McKenzie High School football standout Marquez Taylor is transferring from Austin Peay to the University of Texas El Paso (UTEP). As part of the coaching carousel, Austin Peay’s Head Coach Scotty Walden, a native Texan, was offered the top spot at UTEP. Taylor announced Tuesday he was leaving the Governors to join Walden and the Miners team.

McKenzie Takes Two From Milan

McKENZIE (December 19) — On Tuesday, both the girls’ and the boys’ basketball had solid wins against the Milan Bulldogs. The Lady Rebels whooped up on their opponent 86-33, a game in which Savannah Davis knocked down 17 three-pointers (a state record) and accumulated 60 points for the game. Davis tied the Lady Rebel individual single-game record, equaling Anna Comer’s 60 points against Hollow-Rock Bruceton in 2016.

Huntingdon Mustangs Put Out in Kentucky Tourney

BENTON, Ky. (December 20, 21) — The Huntingdon Mustangs opened the FNB Holiday Classic tournament against the hosting school the Marshall County Marshals. The Mustangs were defeated 75-42 by the Marshals moving to the consolation bracket. Huntingdon then faced the Christian County Colonels. The Mustangs didn’t fare much better as they were put out of the tournament 73-56.
