TVA has renewed its commitment, solidifying its dedication to the Tennessee RiverLine's transformative vision.

TENNESSEE — Average gasoline prices in Tennessee have risen 6.2 cents per gallon in the last week, averaging $3.06/g today, according to GasBuddy’s survey of 3,821 stations in Tennessee. Prices in Tennessee are 22.2 cents per gallon higher than a month ago and stand 8.5 cents per gallon lower than a year ago. The national average price of diesel has fallen 1.3 cents in the last week and stands at $4.02 per gallon.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Congressman David Kustoff (R-TN) secured $5,000,000 for the Tennessee Department of Transportation to add more lanes to Highway 641 from Howard Road, in Henry County, to the Kentucky state line. Specifically, it will widen US-641 to four-lanes from Paris, Tennessee into Kentucky.

$144 Million, that’s how much money could/will leave Tennessee public schools and flow into the pockets of private (for-profit) schools within the first year of the school voucher program, the money will “follow the student.” According to Governor Bill Lee’s proposal, the state will pay up to $7,000 annually per student that has the means and desire to attend a private school instead of the public school in their area.

ATWOOD (March 7) — West Carroll Special School District launched a new phone app and upgraded its website to better serve the stakeholder of the school system. Michelle Robinson, who headed the project, displayed the newly available phone app, that will provide a central point of communications for teachers, students and parents. Robinson said the app and upgraded website will consolidate communications for the school system.

MURFREESBORO (March 8) — After posting 55 points in the quarterfinals, Greenfield’s offense did not fare as well in the semifinals. The Lady Yellowjackets (23-11) drew a good Moore County (27-8) team in the second round. While neither team scored many points, Greenfield bowed out of the Division I Class 1A tournament losing 38-28.

MURFREESBORO (March 6) — The Lady Yellowjackets of Greenfield (22-10) picked up a big win Thursday evening as they knocked the North Greene (26-10) Lady Huskies out of the TSSAA Girls State Basketball Tournament. Greenfield took an early lead in the opening minutes and never lost their momentum winning 55-49 in the quarterfinal round.

MURFREESBORO (March 7) — In the fourth 2A game of the day, the Loretto Lady Mustangs (27-3) faced the Westview Lady Chargers (22-5). Loretto and Westview kept the game close with nine lead changes. At game’s end, Westview lost 54-49 to Loretto who came in runner-up in the championship game against Gibson County.

MURFREESBORO (March 7) — After five months of competitive basketball, the Huntingdon Fillies season came to an end in the quarterfinal round of the TSSAA State Championship for Class 2A. The Huntingdon Fillies (23-5) played their hearts out losing 58-49 against a tough Gibson County Lady Pioneers (30-1) team.

As I sit in my hotel room in Murfreesboro this weekend, I’ve had a lot of time to reflect on some things. A question asked earlier in the week was why are you, the McKenzie Banner, covering other schools in the state basketball tournament? My natural knee-jerk response was because it’s a business decision, but as I’ve had time to marinate on the question, that’s not the whole truth.

Under the expanded multi-million dollar program, students that already attend private schools could receive $7,000 of tax-payer dollars towards their tuition. That only makes sense to the parents of private schooled students. It will do nothing but hurt public schools.
