Stolen Items Recovered, Two Arrested — Two Trezevant men were arrested on Sept. 4 when stolen items were found to be in their possession.

William Timothy Vestal, 56, of 5 Clearview Avenue was charged with theft of property over $2,500, and Joseph Walters was charged with theft of items totaling over $5,000, felony possession of schedule II, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony. According to the report by Deputy Chance Townes, while on patrol he observed a Polaris Ranger fitting the description of one recently reported as stolen in the front yard at Vestal’s residence and found Vestal and Walters there on the property. During the course of investigation, deputies determined that the Ranger was the one reported as stolen, and deputies found other stolen items at that property, including two firearms. Other stolen items were later found at Walters’ residence. A substance believed to be methamphetamine was found in a lunch box inside the Ranger along with Walters’ drivers license.

Fraud — The Sheriff’s Department is investigating a recent case of fraud.

A Cedar Grove man contacted deputies on Sept. 9 and said that his wife had been contacted by someone claiming to be with their bank’s fraud division regarding their Amazon account. At this person’s instruction, she purchased $1,500 in gift cards and gave him the code numbers off the cards. Investigator Adam Meggs advised the victims that they had been scammed.

DUI — Richard Michael Garner, 57, of Lyles was charged with DUI and violation of implied consent on Sept. 3 in McKenzie.

Deputy Michael Sevarns reported that he was participating in a DUI checkpoint on Highway 79 when a vehicle driven by Garner was stopped at the checkpoint. While speaking with Garner, Sevarns detected the odor of alcohol, and, when asked about it, Garner said he had recently been drinking alcoholic beverages and smoking marijuana. While being given field sobriety tests, Garner said he could not and would not complete the tests and then refused to submit to a blood-alcohol or breath test.

Public Intoxication — Tyler Edward Stewart, 27, of 1760 Clarksburg Road, Huntingdon, was charged with public intoxication on Sept. 1 at his residence.

Deputy Michael Sevarns reported that deputies responded to Stewart’s residence after receiving a call that Stewart had pulled a knife on a family member. Upon arrival, deputies found that Stewart smelled of alcohol, was slurring his words, and was unsteady on his feet. Stewart admitted to drinking multiple beers throughout the day. One witness at the scene said that Stewart had placed a knife to his father’s neck, but other witnesses said that did not happen. Deputies found no knife at the scene, but observed that Stewart had recent cuts on his hands.

Fraud — An Atwood woman recently reported being a victim of fraud.

She told deputies on Sept. 4 she received an email stating that over $1,400 had been charged to her PayPal account. She called a number provided on the email and a male subject instructed her to purchase $1,200 in gift cards and then give him the codes on the cards. After doing this, she starting thinking it might be a scam, so she contacted her bank to stop payment before contacting the Sheriff’s Department.
